Islamophobia in Sweden is a significant issue that has been present for centuries
. The attitudes towards Muslims in Sweden have been mixed, with relations being largely negative in the early 16th century, improving in the 18th century, and declining once again with the rise of Swedish nationalism in the early 20th century. According to Jonas Otterbeck, a Swedish historian of religion, attitudes towards Islam and Muslims today have improved but "the level of prejudice was and is still high".Islamophobia can manifest itself through discrimination in the workforce, prejudiced coverage in the media, and violence against Muslims. The Anti-immigration Anti-Islam Sweden Democrats is the largest party in southern county of Sweden (Skåne) . In recent years, Islamophobia has been on the rise in Sweden. Hate-driven attacks on the religion of Islam have been increasing, and Islamophobia increasingly recognizes no borders in Europe. There have been incidents of Quran burning and other Islamophobic provocations in Sweden, which have led to outrage and protests from Muslim countries and communities. The Swedish government has been criticized for allowing such actions to take place despite warnings, which are seen as encouraging hate crimes and disrupting public order. Sweden has submitted a report to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on Anti-Muslim hatred and the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion or belief.
