Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has stated that Sweden has failed to integrate many of the immigrants who have settled there over the past 20 years, creating a nation of “parallel societies … living in different realities”
. She has launched a series of initiatives to combat organized crime and prevent more children and young people from being drawn into crime. The number of people living in Sweden who were born abroad has doubled over the past 20 years to about 2 million, or one-fifth of the population. Andersson blamed criminals and said both Islamism and right-wing extremism had been allowed to fester in Sweden. Sweden has tightened its immigration policies since taking in more people per capita than any other European Union country during the migration crisis in 2015. A recent study written by a senior Swedish migration official concludes that Norway and Denmark, both notoriously inhospitable to refugees, are more welcoming than Sweden.
