  • Afterpains: The most common reason for cramping after delivery is that the uterus contracts to shrink back down to its original size. These cramps are called afterpains and are more common in individuals who have had multiple pregnancies

  • Cesarean delivery: Afterpains don't only affect people who give birth vaginally. Individuals who have had a cesarean delivery may also experience cramping

  • Constipation: Constipation can cause abdominal pain after delivery

  • Uterine contractions: Postpartum cramping happens as the uterus returns to its pre-pregnancy size after delivery. These cramps are usually most intense on days two and three after delivery, but they should disappear within a week or two.
