In this recently concluded study, researchers examined one hundred thousand individuals over a period of more than a decade. According to the study, those who worked long hours were more likely to engage in physical activity.
Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College researchers discovered that people who sat for more than eight hours per day were 20% more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke. Eight hours of sitting is equivalent to sitting in an office for nine to five hours.
These individuals are 49 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack than those who sit alone for 30 minutes.
According to researchers, reducing sitting time and increasing physical activity can have similar health benefits as quitting smoking.
The study included participants from 21 nations with an average age of 50. In the study, participants were asked how many hours per day and week they spend sitting.
The researchers then examined the participants’ health records for the subsequent eleven years.
By the end of the study, there had been 6,200 deaths. During this time period, there were 2,300 heart attacks, 3,000 strokes, and 700 cases of heart failure, but not all of them were fatal.
