Apple Touch ID not coming back? iOS 15.4 reveals Apple is focusing on Face ID

Apple’s Touch ID, a security feature for the company’s iPhone models, may not return as the company focuses on improving its current Face ID feature. Since the release of the advanced Touch ID feature, the tech giant has started integrating it into its smartphones.

The first model to have this feature was the iPhone 5 in 2013. Then the iPhone 6 and other models followed. However, Touch ID integration was discontinued by Apple after the announcement of the iPhone X. Some consumers criticized the move since the company recently announced an under-display sensor, as reported by MacRumors.

At the time, the company said it was two years ahead of the competition, but five years after the launch of the iPhone X, it still looks like Apple was, at least, half a decade ahead of the competition. its competitors in facial recognition.

According to the latest report from 9To5Mac, the release of iOS 15.4, which is expected to roll out in the coming weeks, means the popular Touch ID will no longer be available .

Rumors about the removal of Touch ID began after the global COVID-19 pandemic began. Some consumers find this fingerprint recognition feature quite effective, as it works very easily and quickly. However, the bitten-apple giant is now considering using Face ID technology, as it is more secure than Touch ID technology. With Face ID, all you have to do is look at your iPhone screen. After that, it will open automatically.

Face ID is now more efficient
Apple’s Face ID still has some issues. One of them is its inaccuracy when the user wears masks. Remember that people around the world might still need to wear face coverings since the global pandemic can last for years until it is completely neutralized.

For this reason, Apple has come up with a simple solution to solve the problem of masks, which is to integrate the eye recognition function into Face ID . This new feature should be available as soon as iOS 15.4 is released. Thanks to this innovation, Apple consumers will soon be able to unlock their iPhones even when wearing a mask in public

iOS 15.3.1 available for download. Don’t wait and update

IPhone users can now install the stable iOS 15.3.1 release. This is an urgent update that fixes the 0-day vulnerability giving unauthorized access to the phone. Installation requires less than 900 MB of data to be downloaded.

Apple has released an iOS and iPadOS update, which is crucial for security. Version 15.3.1 may come as a surprise (release 15.4 is already available in a trial version), but don’t hesitate to install it. The update includes a patch for the 0-day vulnerability marked as CVE-2022-22620 , which allows you to get to the data on the device.

According to Kaspersky , it is about incorrect management of dynamic memory in applications, which in practice leads to unauthorized access to data. The attack can be carried out from the level of a crafted website and ultimately lead to the execution of arbitrary code on an unpatched version of iOS. That is why the installation of the revised version of the system is so important.

The vulnerability was classified as Use-After-Free , which means unauthorized access to the theoretically freed memory by other applications. The idea is to use unremoved pointers that allow hackers to access data in memory that should not, by definition, be reachable, especially from other programs.

Tap to Pay on iPhone: Apple introduces new payment method

With Apple Pay you can pay in-store with your iPhone. Soon it might also work at the weekly market. Apple has now laid the foundation for this.

Apple’s Apple Pay payment service usually works wherever you can pay with a credit card – especially in larger shops. With Tap to Pay on iPhone, the company will soon be turning many iPhones into payment terminals. According to the press release , all you need is an iPhone XR (or a more recent model) and the right partner app, and any iPhone can accept payments via NFC. The central component of the tap-to-pay-on-iPhone function is of course Apple Pay, but contactless payment should also work with other services, wallets, credit and debit cards in the future.

iPhone replaces Terminal

Convenient for customers: you don’t have to change at all. Instead of an NFC terminal, you are simply given an iPhone to hold your cell phone or Apple Watch or (NFC-enabled) credit card to complete the traction. As with Apple Pay, all transactions made with Tap to Pay on iPhone are encrypted. According to Apple, it does not know what you bought where and when.

When will Tap to Pay on iPhone be available?

First, Apple wants to work with leading payment platforms and app developers from the payment service provider and eCommerce industry to enable Tap to Pay on iPhone merchants in the US. The Stripe platform is the starting point. More services are to follow later in 2022. In order for companies to be able to adapt their apps accordingly, Apple wants to integrate Tap to Pay on iPhone in an upcoming beta version of iOS. That doesn’t sound like an early start in Germany.

iPhone 13: Apple removes noise cancellation when making calls

Apple has apparently removed an iPhone function that has been available for several years from its latest series, as users have noticed. It is a feature that is particularly helpful for the hearing impaired: the automatic filtering out of ambient noise (noise cancellation) while you are on the phone.

Feature is “not available” – Apple doesn’t say why

While there were initially reports that it could be a bug, Apple Support has now confirmed the deletion to a customer . In a support chat, he complained that his iPhone 13 did not support noise cancellation. The option that could previously be activated in the accessibility area of the device is therefore no longer available there. “Telephony noise suppression is not available on iPhone 13 models,” said the supporter succinctly, who confirmed this when asked: “That’s correct, it’s not supported.”

It is unclear whether this has hardware reasons, i.e. Apple has omitted the corresponding technical features from the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 Pro Max. In practice, this means that during FaceTime calls in a noisy environment, the other party can no longer hear the iPhone 13 owner, and the voice transmission sometimes breaks off.

There is a workaround – with AI

Apple itself explains the feature, which was there until the iPhone 12, by saying that the on-state telephony noise cancellation helps reduce ambient noise during calls when you hold the phone to your ear. However, the omission also seems to have other effects, such as echo effects when using Apple’s iPhone vehicle integration CarPlay.

There is currently a workaround that works a little differently than the previous, robust noise suppression: With iOS 15, Apple introduced AI functions that are intended to improve voice transmission. The feature called “Voice Isolation” is accessed through the iPhone’s Control Center, not System Preferences. Other new communication features can also be found there, such as FaceTime’s portrait mode.
