Indian Army resisting amendments in controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s statement has perplexed. He gave the impression that Indian leaders could make changes in Armed Forces Special Powers Act. He said:

Amending the act will make it more humanitarian, but the army’s rigidness was not leaving much for the government.

The armed forces, and especially the Chief of Army Staff, the present one and the previous one, have taken a very strong position that AFSPA should not be amended.

There is no doubt forces act in very tense environment and under a lot pressure. This does not mean they should commit massacres and killings. What we witnessed in Kashmir and other parts of India is horrible. There are hundreds of cases, which the army personnel committed murders and blunders, which angered local population.

Indian Army should not make resistance. They should convey their reservations.
