Maryam received 70 million dollars as a grant from Michelle Obama. Where did she spend the money?

Dawn reported in October, 23, 2015

US First Lady Michelle Obama’s office announced on Thursday that Pakistan has agreed to double spending for education, from two per cent to four per cent of GDP by 2018.

In return, the First Lady on Thursday announced a $70 million additional contribution to educate adolescent girls in Pakistan.

Her office said that Pakistan would also enrol more girls in school and provide more female teachers.

Earlier on Thursday, the First Lady welcomed Mrs Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif and Ms Maryam Nawaz Sharif to the White House. The two visiting dignitaries came to the official residence of the US president to express their support for Mrs Obama’s programme, the “Let Girls Learn” initiative.

A petitioner filed a case in this regard in the Sindh High Court:

The Sindh High Court on Tuesday directed the respondent federal government authorities to file details of the programme ‘Let Girls Learn’ through which former US first lady Michelle Obama granted 70 million dollars to Maryam Nawaz to promote girls’ education in Pakistan.

The petitioner informed the judges that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz and Michelle Obama had signed a contract to enhance Pak-US cooperation and vowed to work together on expanding opportunities of education for females in Pakistan. However, she alleged, not a single penny was spent on education as no programme was launched by the government.
