A lawyer has told the Sindh High Court that his client, a former MP of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, has been detained for filing a petition to lift the ban on media coverage of party founder Altaf Hussain.
According to the report of Dawn newspaper , former MQM MPA Nisar Ahmad Panhoor filed a petition in the Sindh High Court last week, in which it was said that the ban imposed on Altaf Hussain was imposed in violation of several provisions of the Constitution. There was a request to lift the ban on media coverage.
When the case came up for hearing in the court, a two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Ahmad Ali Muhammad Sheikh questioned the admissibility of the petition
The Chief Justice Sindh High Court inquired about the written order regarding the imposed ban and inquired whether the petitioner has the right to go to court on behalf of another person.
The High Court bench also inquired about the absence of Nisar Ahmad Panhour, to which his lawyer Khalid Mumtaz replied that his client had been picked up last night and the court could take notice of his detention.
While inquiring about the clause empowering the High Court to take suo motu notice, the bench of the High Court directed the counsel for the petitioner to make the petition admissible at the next hearing scheduled by the Registrar.
In his petition, the petitioner named the Federal Interior Minister, Secretary Information and Law and the Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority as defendants and argued that the ban imposed on the media coverage of the founding MQM is in violation of Articles 4, 17, 19 and 25 of the Constitution. It was contended in the petition that Altaf Hussain had never violated any provision of law while the ban imposed against him on account of misinterpretation of his speeches was not maintainable.
