Lost SIM or Stolen Phone in Pakistan: What to Do First

A phone disappears in a Karachi rickshaw

A passenger calls his missing phone. Nobody answers. The SIM inside that handset is also linked to his bank account and WhatsApp. Losing the phone does not automatically expose his money, but the owner needs to act before someone can misuse the number or an unlocked device.

Suspend the SIM through your mobile operator

Contact Jazz, Zong, Ufone or Telenor through its official customer service channel. Request suspension of the missing SIM, complete the operator’s identity checks and save the complaint reference. Suspension stops the card’s mobile service once effective; it does not erase information on the handset.

Replace the missing SIM

The registered subscriber should ask the operator which authorised outlet can issue a replacement and what CNIC and biometric verification it requires. Fees and activation times differ. Once activated, test incoming calls and SMS and confirm the missing SIM is disabled.

PTA handset blocking is a separate procedure

If the phone itself is lost or stolen, use the PTA Complaint Management System to request IMEI blocking. The IMEI identifies the handset for mobile network purposes. PTA device blocking is not SIM suspension, and operator SIM suspension does not automatically block the handset. Blocking an IMEI does not remotely delete photographs or files.

Protect bank accounts and wallets

If the number is registered with a bank or wallet, call its official helpline promptly. Explain whether only the SIM or the entire phone is missing. Ask the institution to assess the risk, restrict vulnerable digital channels and revoke app sessions where available. If cards or payments may be compromised, request appropriate safeguards. Do not assume suspending a SIM logs a banking app out. Record the complaint number and report unfamiliar transactions.

Secure WhatsApp, email and verification codes

From a trusted device, change important passwords, check account recovery options and review linked devices and active sessions. Control of a SIM can expose incoming SMS codes, but does not automatically unlock every account. Never disclose an OTP to a caller offering to recover the SIM.

Locate, lock or erase the handset

Use Google Find Hub for a supported Android phone or Apple Find Devices for an iPhone. Availability depends on device settings and connectivity. Remote erasure may wait until the handset reconnects. Do not confront someone at a reported location; contact police.

After receiving a replacement

Confirm calls and SMS work. Ask the bank how to restore any restricted service safely, inspect transactions and review online accounts for unfamiliar sessions. If your SIM suddenly loses service while still in your possession, contact the operator: an unauthorised replacement is one possible explanation.

What to do first

Suspend the missing SIM, notify financial providers where relevant and separately request PTA device blocking if the handset is gone. Keep all reference numbers. Replacing the SIM restores your number, but does not settle every security concern connected to the missing phone.
