Boston: Experts have warned patients with type 2 diabetes to avoid soda, soft drinks and other sweet drinks altogether, as the disease can cause more complications and increase the risk of premature death.
Experts have suggested plain water, tea and coffee instead because the harm of these drinks can be reduced. But they insist that deaths from other causes can also increase if diabetic patients continue to consume sugary drinks.
Professor Cai Sun of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston and his colleagues have asked diabetics to take special care of their diet.
The summary of the research is that patients with type 2 diabetes already have a higher risk of heart disease, which is increased by sweet drinks.
A total of 15,400 men were included in the study, all of whom were patients with type 2 diabetes. These people were followed up for 18 consecutive years. A total of 22% of people suffered from life-threatening and non-life-threatening cardiovascular disease during this period. Many also underwent bypass surgery and angioplasty, while life-threatening and disabling paralysis also had an effect. Then it happened that 49 percent of the people died in this whole study.
