Pune: Small pieces of plastic coming out of your child’s plastic toys, bottles or tiffins can put them at risk of various diseases.
Small pieces of plastic less than 5 mm in size (microplastics) are posing a threat not only to our environment and surroundings but also to our health.
Microplastics from plastic bottles, tiffins, containers, packets of chips and single-use plastic items enter our body. These particles are found in oceans, rivers, soil and even air.
The risk of microplastics in young children increases because they have a habit of putting daily use items in the mouth. Microplastics can cause digestive problems, inflammation and disruption of nutrient absorption. These can affect even fetal development. Therefore, it is important that you try to protect yourself and your family from exposure to microplastics as much as possible.
Microplastics can affect various health issues such as fertility and obesity, organ problems and even development in children," said Dr Jagdish Kathotti, Consultant Neonatologist and Pediatrician
Bharati.
He said that it is a known fact that obesity is the root of all diseases and has become an epidemic in India. Obesity affects all organs of the body. What’s even more dangerous is that pieces of plasty enter us just by eating, drinking and breathing. In such a situation, it is very important for parents to take care of their children.
