When we think of the history of West Germany, we often overlook the important role that Turkish Muslims played in its development. Their contributions, both economically and socially, were significant and deserve recognition.
In the 1960s, West Germany faced a labor shortage, and they turned to Turkey to recruit guest workers, known as “Gastarbeiter.” Around 900,000 Turkish migrants came to West Germany in search of employment opportunities.
These Turkish migrants played a crucial role in the German economy, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and hospitality. They worked tirelessly to contribute to the rebuilding and growth of West Germany after the devastation of World War II. Their hard work and dedication helped fuel the country’s economic success during the “Wirtschaftswunder” (economic miracle) era.
Beyond their economic impact, Turkish Muslims enriched the cultural diversity of West German society. They brought their traditions, language, and values, contributing to the multicultural fabric of the nation. Over the years, Turkish communities established mosques, cultural centers, and organizations that provided support and fostered a sense of belonging for fellow migrants.
However, despite their undeniable contributions, it is unfortunate that some segments of the far right have forgotten or chosen to overlook the positive role played by Turkish Muslims in the building of West Germany. It is essential to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions made by individuals from diverse backgrounds, as they have shaped the very fabric of our society.
As we reflect on the history of West Germany, let us remember and acknowledge the hard work, resilience, and contributions of Turkish Muslims. Their endeavors have not only helped build a prosperous nation but have also enriched the German culture and values we cherish today.
