After a long struggle and 60 years, scientists have developed the most powerful vaccine ever to protect ‘poliomyelitis’, a disease known as polio, which cripples humans and especially young children.
Even before the new vaccine, there were two polio vaccines available in the world, which are used worldwide.
The two vaccines are known as oral polio vaccines (OPVs) and inactivated polio vaccines (IPVs), one of which is administered by mouth and the other as an injection.
The world’s first polio vaccine, IPV, was developed in 1950, followed by the oral vaccine OPVs in 1960.
Both of these vaccines are still in use around the world, including Pakistan, but most of the oral vaccines are used, which is also called vaccination.
But now experts have developed the most powerful vaccine ever given to protect and eliminate polio by mouth, whose all stages of trial were also successful.
According to the medical journal Nature, the ‘superengineered vaccine’ has been developed by American and British experts with funding from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
According to the journal, the vaccine also includes the most vulnerable part of the live poliovirus, while genetic engineering technology has also been used in it.
The report said that the vaccine will also be given by mouth and this vaccine will affect all types of polio.
According to the journal, the ‘super-engineered polio vaccine’ is capable of affecting and eliminating both types of poliovirus currently present in the world i.e. ‘type 1’ and ‘type 3’.
There were mainly three types of polio virus, in which type 2 was confirmed to be eradicated from the world in 2015, while type 3 was also announced to end in 2019.
At present, there is only one type 1 type of polio in the world, while unfortunately polio has not yet been eradicated from Pakistan.
According to experts, after the vaccine is given to the infected person, it eliminates or changes the virus so much that the altered effects of the polio virus are not transmitted to the waste discharged by the infected person.
It should be noted that the polio virus also has the power to transmit through contaminated water and human waste residue.
The vaccine was developed a few years ago and trials began in 2016.
The new vaccine was given to about 70 million people in more than 150 countries of the world and the results of its trial were also encouraging.
Now other world organizations, including the World Health Organization, and health institutions of various states and countries will allow it to be used, only then its general use will be started.
