Summer can “not itch”! How to protect yourself from ticks, mosquitoes and blackflies?

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, but it’s important to protect yourself from ticks, mosquitoes, and blackflies to avoid any discomfort or potential health risks. Here are a few tips to help you stay protected:

  1. Wear protective clothing: When venturing into areas with a high concentration of ticks, mosquitoes, or blackflies, it’s best to wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. Tucking your pants into your socks can provide an additional barrier against ticks. Opt for light-colored clothing to make it easier to spot any insects on you.
  2. Use insect repellent: Apply an EPA-approved insect repellent on any exposed skin and clothing. Look for repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Follow the instructions on the label and reapply as necessary.
  3. Avoid prime biting times: Ticks are most active during the spring and summer months, whereas mosquitoes and blackflies tend to be more active during dawn and dusk. If possible, avoid spending time in areas where these insects are most prevalent during their peak activity times.
  4. Use screened-in areas: If you’re planning to spend time outdoors, consider using screened-in areas like porches or gazebos to create a barrier between you and the insects. Repair any holes in screens to prevent smaller insects from getting through.
  5. Check for ticks: After spending time in potentially tick-infested areas, thoroughly check your body for ticks. Pay close attention to the scalp, underarms, back of knees, and other hard-to-see areas. If you spot a tick, remove it carefully using tweezers, ensuring you remove the entire tick and clean the area with an antiseptic.

Remember, the above tips can help minimize the risk, but they do not guarantee complete protection. Stay vigilant while enjoying outdoor activities and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about insect-related illnesses. Happy and safe outdoor adventures!
