A Pakistani student receives an admission letter from a German university. The family begins calculating the cost of studying abroad. Even where tuition is low, the student must still prove that enough money is available for living expenses. For many families, the first major financial decision is a blocked account, known as a Sperrkonto.
I first compared Fintiba, Expatrio and Coracle in October 2024. Since then, published service fees have increased. Coracle has also posted information about a pause in new blocked-account applications. The right question is no longer simply which provider charges less. A Pakistani applicant must examine the funding process, monthly payouts and what happens if the visa is refused.
How much must a Pakistani student block in 2026?
German visa guidance for Pakistan generally states €992 per month, or €11,904 for twelve months. The amount depends on the visa category and individual circumstances, so check the latest instructions of the German missions in Pakistan before depositing funds. A scholarship or an accepted formal declaration of commitment may provide alternative proof in qualifying cases.
The blocked money remains the student’s funds. A provider releases it in monthly instalments after the required account activation in Germany. It is not a service fee paid to the company.
Fintiba and Expatrio: service fees compared
For new Fintiba accounts opened from November 3, 2025, the provider states an initial €159 opening fee and a €9.90 monthly administration fee. Fintiba explains its new fee schedule here. Expatrio currently advertises €119 setup and €9 monthly for its blocked-account offering. Its product page gives the current offer.
| Provider | Setup fee | Monthly fee | 12-month service fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fintiba | €159 | €9.90 | €277.80 |
| Expatrio | €119 | €9 | €227 |
On these published terms, Expatrio’s annual service charges are €50.80 lower. This does not necessarily make the total international transfer cheaper. Promotions, existing contracts and how providers collect fees can affect what an applicant actually pays.
What should a Pakistani family budget?
A student who must block €11,904 should budget for the blocked funds plus provider fees. Over twelve months the combined amounts would be €12,181.80 using Fintiba’s listed fees, or €12,131 using Expatrio’s. These are overall allocations, not promises that the entire amount is payable upfront. Each provider issues exact transfer instructions and may require a buffer or handle monthly fees differently.
For a family buying euros with Pakistani rupees, the exchange rate and international remittance charges also matter. An intermediary bank may deduct fees before the money reaches the beneficiary. Ask the sending bank whether the amount received in Germany will meet the funding instruction in full.
Why funding the account from Pakistan needs planning
Opening an online blocked account and successfully funding it are two separate tasks. A Pakistani bank may request the university admission letter and the provider’s payment instruction before sending an education-related remittance. The bank must apply the relevant State Bank of Pakistan foreign-exchange rules and verify beneficiary details.
International transfers can also encounter correspondent-bank checks or intermediary fees. My separate article on why international payments are stopped or returned explains what can happen after a Pakistani bank authorises a payment. For a wider overview, see the Pakistan Cross-Border Payments Guide.
What makes Fintiba different?
Fintiba allows applicants to arrange a blocked account online, with insurance-related services available alongside it. This may appeal to students who want to organise several arrangements in one place. But a bundle should not be confused with a single insurance policy: study and visa insurance requirements depend on the applicant’s circumstances and university enrolment.
The company details fee collection, account funding and payments in its official help centre. We also have an earlier practical guide on how to open a German blocked account with Fintiba. Applicants should verify its steps against Fintiba’s current interface.
What makes Expatrio different?
Expatrio sells a blocked-account product and a Value Package with insurance-related features. Its website advertises a connected German bank account for monthly payouts. The ordinary current account and the blocked account are not the same: the blocked account proves sufficient funds, while the current account handles everyday spending.
Expatrio’s help centre provides account activation and transfer instructions. Study the full contract and final checkout figures, especially if you select insurance or other bundled services.
What happened to Coracle?
Coracle appeared in my 2024 comparison at a €99 opening fee and no monthly maintenance charge. That historical figure must not be treated as a current offer. Its help centre has published information on a pause in accepting new blocked-account applications. I could not establish a reliable current quotation or confirm that a new Pakistani student application would be accepted today. Obtain direct written confirmation before considering it.
If the German visa is refused, can the student get the money back?
Blocked funds are generally refundable under the provider’s release procedure when a visa is refused, but the applicant must submit the documents the provider requires. Service fees, exchange-rate losses and return-transfer charges are different matters; they may not all be refunded.
Before funding the account, check which documents prove a refusal, what refund charges apply, where the money will be sent and whether the original sender’s bank account must receive it. These questions are particularly important for families transferring the money from Pakistan.
Which blocked account should a Pakistani applicant choose?
Expatrio has lower published standard twelve-month account service fees on the information checked for this article. Fintiba may suit applicants who prefer its product arrangements and accept the additional cost. Coracle should not be described as a currently available alternative without confirmation of its application status.
For a Pakistani family, I would obtain written funding instructions and a complete fee breakdown from the provider before asking a bank to remit the euros. A small difference in provider fees can be outweighed by the cost of a delayed or short international transfer when a visa appointment is approaching.
Updated October 10, 2026. Provider fees and German visa requirements can change. Verify them with official providers and the German mission before sending funds. This article provides general information rather than individual visa or financial advice.
