Banana is a super food.

Banana is a fruit that is easily available in all seasons. Everyone can afford to eat because it is sold at cheap prices.

Most of us did know that that it is called superfood. A banana has a high amount of fiber which helps to keep the stomach full.

Bananas also contain some essential vitamins that are good for the body.

This fruit is rich in potassium and fiber and through it the body also gets magnesium, vitamin C and B6.

You may not know it, but eating bananas every day is very beneficial for health, some of the benefits are as follows.

A large banana contains 120 calories and 490 mg of potassium, which is 19% of the daily intake for women and 15% for men.

This potassium calms the blood vessels which helps in controlling blood pressure while potassium also removes excess salts from the body.

Bananas are also a good source of vitamin B6, which is essential for the immune system, nervous system and brain.

What are the benefits of potassium?

A diet rich in potassium helps in controlling blood pressure as it removes excess salts from the urinary tract.

Potassium also improves the health of arteries, which reduces the risk of stroke, strengthens bones with age, improves muscle function, and helps prevent kidney stones.

But in case of kidney problems too much potassium can be harmful then it is better to consult a doctor.

Best for the stomach

Bananas are an easily digestible fruit, so doctors often recommend eating bananas to combat indigestion or stomach pain.

This fruit helps protect the gastric wall from acidity which can cause heartburn, vomiting or indigestion.

Probiotics in bananas can also help relieve inflammation of the urinary tract.

It is also thought that probiotics may help reduce the severity of the common cold and flu.

Improve physical performance

One study found that cyclists who ate a banana before a bicycle race performed just as well as those who drank sports drinks.

Quickly eliminate the effects of exercise

Research has shown that strenuous exercise with bananas helps to quickly eliminate the negative effects on the body.

Best choice for breakfast

The natural sweetness in it helps to keep away from sweets at breakfast. Drinking banana shake also has health benefits.

Full of fiber

Dietary fiber is very important for the body and a banana contains an average of 3 grams of fiber, which is equivalent to 10% of the daily requirement.

Bananas are high in fiber which helps control cholesterol and blood pressure while also reducing inflammation.

Eating bananas due to fiber increases the feeling of fullness without creating extra calories and therefore it is also a good choice for weight loss.

The right amount of carbohydrates

Bananas, like all fruits, contain carbohydrates, but they are not so high that diabetics cannot enjoy them.

If you are diabetic, you can enjoy half a banana if you are hungry prematurely.

A medium-sized banana contains 27 grams of carbohydrates.

Vitamin B6

A banana contains 25% of the daily requirement of vitamin B6, which helps in the function of vitamin metabolism, while improving the health of the immune system as well as contributing to the development of the baby during pregnancy. does

Vitamin C

The body needs 75 to 90 milligrams of vitamin C daily, and one banana contains 10 milligrams of vitamin C.

Vitamin C also helps the immune system to function better.

Magnesium

This mineral helps in controlling blood pressure and blood sugar and keeps the bones strong. One banana provides the body with 8% of the daily requirement of this mineral.

Vitamin A

This vitamin is good for eyesight and may also help prevent cancer

Dark circles around the eyes are not always a cosmetic defect. They can be a symptom of a serious heart disease

Once this disease was considered a rare disease, now doctors diagnose it more and more often. Cardiac amyloidosis is an insidious disease, it often gives non-specific symptoms such as “raccoon eyes”, or dark circles around the eyes. If left untreated, it leads to heart failure. Cardiac amyloidosis can be effectively diagnosed and better treated.

It is important to be aware of the specificity of the disease and to apply the right procedures, necessarily at the right stage, because patients do not have time for a long diagnostic process – argues prof. Magdalena Kostkiewicz, head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Krakow Specialist Hospital John Paul II, an expert of the Polish Society of Nuclear Medicine.

Abnormal proteins
As the specialist explains, the deposition of characteristic, insoluble, abnormally shaped proteins in the heart plays a key role in the development of heart amyloidosis. There can be up to 30 types of them.

Two types are responsible for over 95 percent. cases of amyloidosis: immunoglobulin light chains – this is AL amyloidosis and transteritin – ATTR amyloidosis.

Prof. Magdalena Kostkiewicz
Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Krakow Specialist Hospital John Paul II, an expert of the Polish Society of Nuclear Medicine
These proteins accumulate in the heart muscle and cause its contractility to gradually deteriorate; first the diastolic function, then the systolic function. As the disease progresses, heart failure gradually develops, a serious and irreversible disease.

There are two forms of ATTR amyloidosis: wild-type acquired ATTR, also referred to as senile amyloidosis, and the inherited form.

Wild -type transthyretin amyloidosis most often affects older men with heart failure . It often coexists with carpal tunnel syndrome and changes in the lumbar spine. The disease may affect up to 30 percent. previously undiagnosed patients over 60 years of age with heart failure and sometimes with aortic valve disease.
The hereditary form of ATTR develops on the basis of mutations in the TTR gene. Reports in Poland include several dozen cases, and endemic outbreaks are present in many countries, including Japan, Italy, Portugal and the USA.
Diagnose in time
Cardiac amyloidosis is difficult to diagnose due to the non-specific symptoms of the disease.

  • It can be both heart failure and an abnormal function of many organs – mainly the liver, kidneys, central nervous system, but also the gastrointestinal tract and the musculoskeletal system. There are reports of certain characteristics of the patient’s appearance, such as bruising around the eyes, which are referred to in Anglo-Saxon literature as “raccoon eyes” – dark circles around the eyes.

The patient may experience enlargement of the tongue, rupture of the brachial muscle or narrowing of the carpal tunnel. It is the systemic form of amyloidosis.
Cardiac amyloidosis is primarily its failure, the appearance of edema on the lower limbs, breathing difficulties, shortness of breath – initially occurring after exercise, then even at rest, gradual limitation of physical capacity, and cardiac arrhythmias. These are non-specific symptoms that may also apply to many other diseases, hence difficulties in diagnosis – explains Prof. Magdalena Kostkiewicz.

In order to detect the disease, a thorough medical examination is needed. An ECG, echocardiography and blood laboratory tests should also be performed. Then, cardiac magnetic resonance and isotope examination are performed.

If there are still doubts about the diagnosis after performing these tests, a heart muscle biopsy is performed. Although sometimes this study is not conclusive.

Bitter gourd juice controls sugar

Love or hate bitter gourd but you have all the reasons to include this bitter vegetable in your daily diet.

Photo by Joshimer Biu00f1as on Pexels.com

It is full of potassium, vitamin C, iron, magnesium and fiber.

This vegetable is especially beneficial. If you suffer from diabetes, asthma, constipation, cough, skin disease, or any kind of inflammation then you must include bitter gourd in your diet.

There are different ways to prepare bitter gourd in the kitchen. Some people cook it in the form of dried vegetables with onion and other spices while some people like to prepare bitter gourd curry.

However, many people prefer to use bitter gourd juice as it has many benefits ranging from controlling diabetes to losing weight. Bitter gourd has been known for its medicinal benefits since ancient times. It has anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-virus and cholesterol lowering properties.

Health benefits of bitter gourd juice

Helps prevent viral diseases:
Bitter gourd juice, with its powerful antiviral properties, can stimulate the immune system and stimulate body cells to help fight viruses such as the White Spot Syndrome virus and the human immunodeficiency virus.

Helps prevent cancer:

Studies show that bitter gourd juice also helps prevent the growth of breast cancer cells and can be used as a dietary supplement to prevent breast cancer.

Effective in controlling diabetes:

Patients with diabetes are advised to include bitter gourd juice in their daily diet as it has several benefits. Drinking a glass of bitter gourd juice every morning is very useful for diabetics. This vegetable is rich in Polypeptide-P which can prevent a sudden rise in sugar levels.

Various studies have also shown that regular consumption of this juice improves glycemic control. However, if you are one of those people who have low blood sugar, talk to your doctor before drinking this juice.

Improves immunity:
Bitter gourd juice is an amazing ingredient to fight infections, especially in winter. It also helps with indigestion, constipation and other intestinal problems that are quite common this season. The high presence of antioxidants in bitter gourd prevents free radical damage.

Improves vision:
Because it is rich in vitamin A and beta carotene, regular consumption of bitter gourd juice improves eyesight and prevents vision-related conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration, etc.

Can bitter gourd juice be harmful in some cases?
Bitter gourd juice can have side effects if not followed carefully, including stomach problems and vomiting. In addition, pregnant women should not drink the juice without consulting their doctor.

It is also advisable to keep the juice in moderation as it can cause digestive problems. So drink bitter gourd juice daily but in moderation and only after consulting your nutritionist.

10 facts about antibiotics. What you need to know to take them properly?

Photo by Pietro Jeng on Pexels.com

Poor intake of antibiotics causes the growth of drug-resistant bacteria
It is not without reason that when prescribing an antibiotic, the doctor gives us the entire list of doses and hours to take the drugs. Often, patients who want to speed up recovery decide to discontinue the drug, increase the dose without the doctor’s knowledge or take it in wrong doses than it was prescribed – too much or too little. One thing is for sure, it is wrong. This should not be done. The concentration of the drug in the body is then insufficient, and the bacteria survive and can therefore acquire immunity.

Do not drink grapefruit juice during antibiotic treatment
Grapefruit juice interacts with some medications and interferes with their action, so all medications (including antibiotics, of course) are best washed down with boiled water.

Prebiotics should be taken during antibiotic treatment
During the treatment, antibiotics fight both pathogenic and beneficial bacteria. This can lead to antibiotic-induced diarrhea (up to 40% of children treated with antibiotics have it).

However, it is easily preventable. For this purpose, it is worth stocking up on products rich in live bacteria cultures, such as:

  • Soured milk
  • Ready-made preparations purchased at a pharmac
    y
We should remember to take prebiotics also after finishing antibiotic therapy

Personal hygiene protects against bacteria
It should become a habit for everyone to wash their hands . We wash our hands after returning home, after using the toilet and in many other cases. This activity has a proven antibacterial effect and prevents the development of resistance to antibiotics.

Bacteria pass on antibiotic resistance to each other
Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics. It can happen as a result of changes in the bacterial cell itself or it can be delivered as a gift from other microbes . Moreover, this immunity is permanent and hereditary. It can be passed on to other strains of the same or a different species of bacteria.

Antibiotics reduce the effect of birth control pills
Women taking hormonal contraception must remember that their contraception is impaired when taking antibiotics .

It all happens because of the active substance of contraceptive pills, which need to be activated by intestinal bacteria and are largely destroyed by antibiotics.
Both antibiotics and hormonal contraceptives are metabolized in the liver, which may interfere with each other’s effects.

Antibiotics should not be overused
Remember that antibiotics are not administered to the virus. Prophylactic prescription of an antibiotic in the event of a viral disease is not a good solution. Not every disease qualifies for antibiotic treatment.

Since viruses are not treated with antibiotics, they will not do any good, but will do harm.
They can sterilize the gut flora and destroy the ” good bacteria “, which could result in an actual bacterial infection in the future.

Antibiotics should not be taken with milk, yogurt or kefir
The calcium contained in dairy products may inhibit the action of some antibiotics (e.g. tetracyclines).
In turn, drinks containing caffeine (coffee, tea, cola) have a negative effect on the absorption of drugs.
The best solution for taking them orally is to drink them only with water.

We take antibiotics at the same or similar times
The effectiveness of an antibiotic depends on the appropriate concentration in the tissues, which must be maintained for a certain period of time, therefore it is very important to take antibiotics at regular, well-defined intervals.

If the antibiotic is to be administered three or four times a day (i.e. every 8 or six hours, respectively), the day should be divided accordingly, including day and night.

Stopping the drug prematurely, when we are feeling well, is also not good. This may encourage the bacteria to become resistant to the antibiotic and will not kill the bacteria that caused the infection. As a result, a repeated illness may occur.

We do not drink alcohol while taking antibiotics
You should not drink alcohol while taking any medications, let alone antibiotics.

The combination of an antibiotic and alcohol can cause severe side effects:

1.nausea,
2.vomiting,
3.headaches,
4.seizures
Alcohol weakens the action of most antibiotics and weakens the entire body, and therefore we recover more slowly.

Common pain medications can also cause heart attacks and strokes, research shows

The US and Chinese experts have discovered in a joint study that certain painkillers can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, and even stroke because they contain sodium.

Photo by Karolina Grabowska on Pexels.com

Top of the list is paracetamol, which contains a significant amount of sodium to make it instantly soluble in water.

The most important component of salt is sodium which is very important for our health. But if the amount of sodium in the body is too much, instead of making us healthy, this sodium can also make us suffer from diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

According to the World Health Organization, no more than 2000 milligrams (half a teaspoon) of sodium should reach our body in a day, while the American Heart Association has set a lower limit of 1500 milligrams) of sodium should reach our body in a day.

With this limit in mind, experts found that each 500 mg tablet of paracetamol (acetaminophen) contained about 400 mg of sodium.

It is one of the most widely used painkillers in the world and is available at almost every medical store.

This means that people who take just two tablets of paracetamol a day are adding 800 milligrams of sodium to their diet, which can be detrimental to their health in the long run.

But is that really possible? To find out, they searched an extensive British public health database.

Of this, detailed health data for about 300,000 British citizens aged 60 or over, covering a year, was taken.

All of these seniors were those who used paracetamol daily. About half of them were without sodium, while the rest were taking sodium paracetamol.

Elderly people who used sodium paracetamol daily had a slightly higher risk of disease and death over the next year than others, such as hypertension, heart attack and stroke.

The relationship between sodium intake and heart disease is so obvious that it cannot be ignored.

Because the study was based on data from no direct observations, experts are unable to say exactly how the excess sodium affected their health. Will be.

Experts in the study, published in the latest issue of the European Heart Journal, have called for further study.

However, he also warned that pharmaceutical companies would not write anything on the label about the amount of sodium in their products.

Experts urge both pharmaceutical companies and physicians to inform patients about the presence and extent of sodium in medicines as this is an important aspect that should not be overlooked in the light of current information.

Nutritional value or health benefits of potatoes

Nutritional Potatoes

Photo by Antara Verma on Pexels.com

Paradoxically, we underestimate the value of potatoes due to their multitude and availability. Potatoes are easily digestible, and the nutrients they contain are easily absorbed by our body. Contrary to popular belief, potato tubers are low in calories and not fattening . The caloric value of potatoes is low (69-85 kcal) and comparable to the energy value of cherries (61 kcal / 100 g) or grapes (69 kcal / 100 g), and at the same time it is 4-5 times lower than the energy value of rice and groats (about 340 kcal on average).

It is different when it comes to processed potato products. It is as follows:

  • Dumplings – 147 kcal,
  • Potato dumplings – 210 kcal,
  • Pancakes / potato pancakes – 257 kcal,
  • French fries – 331 kcal,
  • Chips – 552 kcal.

Potatoes are low in fat (approx. 0.1%). In addition, they have an alkaline effect, thanks to which they balance the acid-producing effect on the organism of the meat with which we serve them most often.

Nutritional values of potatoes

Potato tubers are a source of many values . Their main ingredient is starch. Its content ranges from 11 to 18.3% – depending on the variety. When the potato tubers are thermally processed (boiled, baked, frying), the starch becomes sticky. This makes it fully and quickly digested. If we cool the already cooked tubers, the starch is retrograded – its digestibility decreases.

Another important nutrient in potatoes is protein. Despite the fact that it is present in a small amount (approx. 2%), it has a high biological value, although it is not a wholesome protein. It is a source of exogenous amino acids, such as leucine, lysine, phenylalanine, threonine, which the human body cannot synthesize. It is recommended to combine with animal protein (a set of potatoes with a meat / fish / egg portion). The protein put on the plate in this way will be used most effectively.

Potatoes are also high in dietary fiber. It facilitates digestion, improves intestinal peristalsis, increases the volume of the digestive content giving a feeling of fullness, helps in the fight against overweight or lowers cholesterol. Potatoes help with digestive problems, diarrhea and constipation.

Did you know that potatoes have more vitamin C than apples and pumpkins and have more vitamin C than courgettes? It is not the only vitamin in the composition of potatoes. Tubers also provide vitamins A and B group vitamins (B1, B2, B3 and B6).

For a statistical Pole, potatoes – due to their frequent eating – are the main source of vitamin C. This, in turn, effectively protects against cancer and cardiovascular diseases. It also plays an important role in neutralizing the activity of free radicals that are formed in food mainly during frying, smoking and storage.

Next – potassium. This regulates the heart and lowers blood pressure. Hence, the potato diet is used in some heart diseases. Finally – magnesium. This, in turn, is, among others building blocks of teeth and bones, improves metabolism, relieves fatigue and stress.

Potatoes also contain calcium, iron, phosphorus, iodine, copper and zinc.

How does caffeine in coffee lower cholesterol?

Caffeine reduces the production of LDL cholesterol by affecting two proteins. Photo: File

Many benefits of coffee have been reported and more are emerging. Now experts have discovered the scientific reason for the unhealthy caffeine in coffee and other beverages, which lowers LDL cholesterol.

Scientists at McMaster University say that excessive consumption of caffeine reduces the amount of a type of protein in the blood called ‘PCSK-9’.

This protein enters the liver and prevents it from eliminating bad LDL cholesterol. This does not increase the cholesterol which would otherwise accumulate in the arteries and lead to heart attack and stroke.

Senior scientist Dr. Richard Austin, who was involved in the research, said that another function of caffeine is to inhibit the activity of another protein called SREBP2 and this protein further reduces the production of PCSK-9. That is, caffeine prevents the formation of LDL in two ways.

In addition, SREPB2 protein directly and indirectly promotes a variety of diseases, including diabetes and fatty liver. But scientists warn that simply drinking coffee does not help. If you are mixing sugar and cream in it, then all the benefits can be lost. This minimizes the effectiveness of caffeine. Then the habit of soft drinks and sweet syrup makes everyone water.

However, excessive amounts of caffeine can be harmful to the body and that is why coffee consumption should be kept normal but it is possible to take a closer look at caffeine and take note of its active ingredients. You will be able to make an effective medicine by mixing them in a supplement. This drug will play an important role in lowering cholesterol worldwide.

Do you have these symptoms? Be sure to check your blood glucose. It could be pre-diabetes! What is the risk of high blood sugar?

Are you tired and don’t feel like doing anything? These could be symptoms of pre-diabetes! Be sure to check your blood glucose levels, as long-term disturbances in blood sugar levels lead to the development of diabetes with its serious complications. Find out what symptoms may indicate the development of pre-diabetes.

What is pre-diabetes?

Pre-diabetes is a disorder that signals that the level of glucose in your blood is abnormal. If left untreated, it most often leads to the development of type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, it is often underestimated by doctors, which contributes to the increased incidence of this disease. Pre-diabetes symptoms are alarm signals to change your lifestyle and take care of your health.

Currently, there are no clear guidelines on the precise criteria for diagnosing this disorder.  Pre-diabetes is defined as a situation where the blood glucose concentration is :

  • fasting – 100-125 mg / dl,
  • 60 minutes after oral glucose load (OGTT) – approx. 155 mg / dL,
  • 120 minutes after an oral glucose load – 140-199 mg / dL.

It is estimated that 5-10 percent. people with pre-diabetes will develop diabetes mellitus in just one year.

Long-term disturbances in blood glucose levels can significantly affect the well-being and increase the risk of developing not only diabetes, but also cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack and stroke. So it’s good to know how to recognize them.

How to detect pre-diabetes?

Pre-diabetes before the onset of “overt” diabetes may be very different for each person. Many doctors recommend the following tests to make an accurate diagnosis:

  • fasting glucose
  • OGGT, or glucose concentration 2 hours after an oral glucose load,
  • glycosylated hemoglobin , or HbA1C.

The causes of the development of pre-diabetes

The disorders that lead to the development of diabetes are mainly the result of unhealthy habits and lifestyle.

he main factors influencing the development of pre-diabetes include:

  • overweight and obesity,
  • lack of physical activity,
  • high-calorie diet rich in highly processed products,
  • abdominal obesity – waist circumference over 80 cm in women or 94 cm in men,
  • the occurrence of gestational diabetes,
  • having a child weighing more than 4 kg,
  • reduced HDL cholesterol below 40 mg / dl,
  • increased levels of triglycerides in the blood above 150 mg / dl,
  • hypertension,
  • genetic predisposition (diabetes in parents),
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome.

To reduce excess body weight, waist circumference and normalize blood sugar levels, it is recommended to change your eating behavior and introduce regular, moderate-intensity physical activity.

Pre-diabetes treatment – how to protect yourself against the development of diabetes?

Prevention of pre-diabetes is similar to type 2 diabetes. Its main elements are a balanced diet and moderate physical activity. Regular exercise helps to strengthen the body and effectively reduce body fat.

As Finnish scientists observed, weight loss by 5 percent. and moderate physical activity for 35-45 minutes a day can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 75 percent.

In the prevention of diabetes, it is also necessary to change the diet. A balanced diet should provide all the necessary nutrients. In the case of obesity, it is recommended to reduce body weight gradually, by reducing the caloric value of the diet by about 500 kcal per day.

According to the Nurses’ Health Study, a weight loss of 5 kg in people with a predisposition to diabetes reduces the risk of its development by up to 50 percent.

What does the diet look like in the prevention of diabetes? First of all, it should be a balanced menu containing whole grains, which are a source of dietary fiber – incl. rye, wholemeal or graham bread, coarse grains, brown rice, wholemeal pasta. The menu must also include fruit and vegetables in the amount of at least 400 g per day, 3/4 of which should be vegetables.

However, it is worth eliminating from the diet:

  • alcohol,
  • simple carbohydrates such as sugar (sweets, confectionery, etc.),
  • fried and fast food dishes,
  • sweetened drinks
  • fried meat, especially in deep fat.
  • If lifestyle changes are not sufficient, your doctor may decide to initiate drug treatment.
  • Usually, the drug of first choice is metformin, which makes cells more sensitive to insulin and
  • lowers blood sugar.

While playing, the child learns a lot of skills. What toys support development?

Children learn and develop best through play, and the selection of appropriate toys can additionally support their development. In order for them to fulfill their role, several factors must be taken into account.

Contrary to popular belief, toys are not only for entertainment purposes. Thanks to them, children of all ages can develop the skills they will need at a given stage of their lives. Properly selected interactive toys have a positive effect on the motor skills of young children, while the older ones help to develop their imaginations and expand their knowledge about the world. Learning while playing is most effective because it is an interesting activity, not a chore. The article lists some examples of toys that particularly support a child’s development.

Educational mat

Educational mats for babies are very practical and multifunctional toys. They are a portable playground, they are an ideal space for exercising the child’s motor skills, enabling him to actively develop motor skills and providing the joy of discovering new stimuli. Children learn hand-eye coordination, lifting their heads, controlling hand movements, and understanding the relationship between cause and effect. There are many types of mats on the market with various elements that support the development of a baby, such as playing music boxes, safe mirrors or rattles. It is also a safe space for crawling.

Puzzles and jigsaws

On store shelves you will find many puzzles and puzzles that are adapted to the age of the child. They can be great entertainment for a baby as well as fun for the whole family. Puzzles train the brain perfectly, teach logical thinking and analytical activities. They also deepen the imagination. When arranging the little pieces, the child’s brain has to reach into working memory for information about colors and shapes. This activity also influences the development of the toddler’s manual skills. During play, children train motor skills, learn perceptiveness and patience.

Interactive books

Among the toys intended for small children, there should be interactive books with activating elements. Illustrations, different textures, shapes and textures stimulate the baby’s senses, with an emphasis on touch and eyesight. Interactive books require the child’s involvement, opening windows, moving individual elements, touching. They teach that each action brings effects, sharpens perceptiveness and develop cause-and-effect thinking. The subject of content intended for babies is also valuable. Among interactive books, you can find those that show various phenomena related to everyday life, e.g. housework, or the world around us, e.g. with animals and nature.

Interactive toys

Interactive toys teach the child to respond to various stimuli. For example, if a toddler presses a button, the toy may play, move or light up. Depending on the model, the toys can teach letters, numbers, shapes and colors. They also help children associate specific sounds with certain activities, objects or animals. These types develop a child’s curiosity and teach them basic knowledge about the world.

Construction set

Thanks to the blocks, children learn to grasp, their manual skills and motor skills increase. The play of matching different elements and shapes also supports creativity and the ability to think logically. Parents can choose a variety of bricks, smaller, larger, made of plastic or wood, to suit different age groups of children. You can play with blocks in many ways. Not only by building, but also sorting or counting, and larger sets of blocks allow you to play with other children. Activity in a group teaches how to cooperate and has a positive effect on the social abilities of the youngest.

Your retina can reveal mental health or disease

Thinning of the retina of the eye is a sign of cerebral palsy. Photo: File

New research on the eyes has revealed that the stripes on the back of the retina, a sensitive tissue that senses light in the eye, may be related to mental capacity and health.

The most important disease in this regard is Alzheimer’s which gradually destroys the mental capacity. The disease progresses quietly but it is too late when severe symptoms appear. However, the day is not far off when eye examination can predict the condition prematurely, which is a common and severe form of dementia.

According to Ashley Bert Young, a professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, and her research colleagues, eye examinations can be used to diagnose mental illness, especially Alzheimer’s. According to him, mental condition and mental condition can be examined through the window of eyes.

Ten years ago, it was discovered that the retina of Alzheimer’s patients tends to get thinner and thinner. Then, in 2018, it was discovered that Alzheimer’s has three eye conditions, including cataracts and aging-related blindness or AMD.

The University of Otago began the study in the 1970s. One thousand babies born in the 70’s were enrolled in the study. All the children had their eyes opened in the same hospital. Now, 50 years later, 865 adults have been examined who underwent various eye scans at the age of 45. In addition, all participants underwent other eye tests.

In the final examination, the thickness of the layers of retina and ganglion cells of all participants was carefully noted. Now, those who had thin retinas performed poorly in the brain and acquisition tests, that is, even in adolescence and even in childhood, they were behind others in these tests.

But retinal detachment has not been linked to overall cerebral palsy. All the children were mentally retarded at an early age. But statistical analysis has shown that the abnormal decrease in retinal thickness indicates that there is some reduction in brain, mental and cognitive capacity.

However, scientists have stressed the need for further research and more extensive studies will be carried out in the next phase.
